An MP3's size is set by its bitrate and its length. Per minute of audio:
- 320 kbps: about 2.4 MB, the highest MP3 quality
- 192 kbps: about 1.4 MB, close to the original for most music
- 128 kbps: about 1 MB, fine for sharing music and podcasts
- 96 kbps: about 0.7 MB, clean for speech
- 64 kbps: about 0.5 MB, voice memos and lectures
So a 4-minute song at 320 kbps is about 9.6 MB, and the same song at 128 kbps is about 3.8 MB.
Compress without wrecking the quality
Lowering the bitrate is what makes the file smaller, and it also means the MP3 keeps less detail. Speech needs very little, so 64 to 96 kbps sounds clean for a podcast, interview or voice memo. For music, 128 kbps is a good size for sharing, and 192 kbps or more sounds close to the original. Compressing an MP3 that's already at a low bitrate saves little and costs quality, so start from the best copy you have.
Other ways to make audio smaller
Sending on WhatsApp? See compress audio for WhatsApp. Starting from a WAV? Convert WAV to MP3 first; that alone makes it 5 to 10 times smaller. Only need part of the file? Trim it before compressing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an MP3 file for free?
Open SnipSound's free audio compressor, drop in your MP3, choose a lower bitrate, a target file size or a preset, and click Compress. It runs in your browser: no account, and your file never leaves your device.
How much smaller will my MP3 get?
It depends on the bitrate you pick. An MP3 at 320 kbps uses about 2.4 MB a minute; at 128 kbps about 1 MB; at 64 kbps about 0.5 MB. So taking a 320 kbps song down to 128 kbps makes it about 60% smaller.
Will compressing an MP3 reduce the quality?
Some, because the file keeps less data. For speech, 64 to 96 kbps sounds clean. For music, 128 kbps is fine for sharing and 192 kbps or more sounds close to the original.
Can I compress an MP3 to an exact size?
Yes. Choose Target file size, type the size you need (for example 10 MB for Discord or 25 MB for email), and the compressor works out the bitrate that fits.
Is my MP3 uploaded to a server?
No. The compression runs entirely in your browser, so your file never leaves your device.
